pine, lunar landscapes, sandy inlets and miles of desert-style dunes. Yes,
there is another beautiful world beyond the Canaries' seafront resorts.
Location

situated south-west of Spain and
also in front of the coast of Africa,

been always an important station for the navigation amidst Asia, Europe and America.
Be a Good Sport
It is this very variety of landscape, in addition to those

easy. Hike the signposted footpaths that cross the islands, ranging from
sinuosity trails to mountains treks; scuba dive in tempting warm waters,

Landscape
The Canary Islands boast

winter you can enjoy the spectacular and
varied landscape here that you usually have to cross continents to try. Marvel
at the semitropical greenery of La Gomera’s park, the pine-forested top in Gran
Canaria’s mountainous interior or
Fuerteventura’s endless plains, punctuated by cacti, scrub and lots (and
lots) of goats
Or Just Relax...
all inclusive vocation The most clear splotch to relax is
near to a beach, and there are many choices: from the soft rolling dunes in Fuerteventura to the
wide arcs of golden sand in the tenerife. Other people may like to up the
self-pampering stakes by going to a spa. Thalassotherapy centres are spouting
forth everywhere and offer a tempting range of treatments and massages. There’s
also a tidal wave of ocean-front bars where you can enjoy a cocktail at sunset
while contemplating the gently lapping sea.
Superb Art & Architecture
While the Canary Islands may
not boast the grand-slam museums of Spain’s most

constrain art and culture Whims here. Surrealistic people should check
out the spectacular canvases of world-acclaimed painter Óscar Domínguez in his Santa
Cruz de tenerife home town, while the huge
abstract sculptures of locals Martín Chirino and César Manrique are impossible
to miss on Gran Canaria . If buildings are your special thing, look for the
emblematic wooden terraces, leafy internal yards and brightly painted facades
that typify vernacular Canarian architecture
Why I Love the Canary Islands
There are few destinations as underrated and maligned as the
Canary Islands. My first real
encounter, all inclusive vocation I
found so many dramatic mountains, quaint pueblos and charming seashore
villages. I was enamoured with the underdog archipelago and moved there soon
thereafter. For years I discoered every island and was wowed – and wooed –
every time i do that
